Spears reportedly disappointed the show’s svengali Simon Cowell by being normal Britney, not crazy Britney.

She can officially call the “The X Factor” her X-job.

Britney Spears shocked Simon Cowell and the producers of “X Factor” Wednesday night, when someone in her camp “leaked” that the pop-tart had quit the Fox talent show, sources told The Daily News

But the move may simply be a bid to head off her own firing.

“Obviously it saves her the humiliation of being fired," an "X Factor" a show insider told TMZ.

"Everyone knows Simon (Cowell) was not happy with her bland performance on the show. It's been said before: he wanted crazy Britney, she gave him Britney on sleeping pills."

Cowell made the final decision to dump Spears from the show several weeks ago, a second production source said.

“Over the holidays Simon and the production team discussed the judge’s lineup for next year and Britney was not part of their plans,” the production source said.

On the show, Spears' bland delivery, especially her repeated use of the word "amazing" become a running gag for online recappers and late night comedians.

Spears, who was signed along with Lovato amid great fanfare for the Fox show's second season, earned $ 15 million for her critically panned run.

Fellow judge L.A. Reid â€" a veteran by the show's standards â€" previously announced that he would be departing to focus on his record label responsibilities.

“X Factor” officials and reps for Spears declined to comment Thursday.

Hiring Louisiana native Spears was considered a huge television coup because of the 31-year-old pop star's troubled history of meltdowns, antics and eccentricities, like the time she shaved her head in 2007 after her divorce from backup dancer Kevin Federline.

Other Spears oddies included a period when she spoke only in the voice of “Family Guy” cartoon baby Stewie, the time she drove around with her baby on her lap and a moment of paparazzi ecstacy when shutterbugs snapped pictures of her exiting a car without underwear.

Cowell had defended his judge early in the season on a conference call with reporters, saying at the time she had been "a lot better than everybody thought."
