The newly crowned Miss America Mallory Hagan at October's Columbus Day Parade, when she was the reigning Miss New York.
She may have a shiny new tiara, but newly minted Miss America Mallory Hagan is just a regular girl from Brooklyn.
Proof? Hagan, 24, gets coffee at her neighborhood deli in Windsor Terrace, sits in the same spot at her favorite diner every Saturday and stops in for some comfort food at the corner cafe.
Most weekdays, Hagan pops into the 10th Avenue Deli & Grocery Express for a cup of coffee and some breakfast.
âShe comes in on her way to the subway,â says owner Mike Aishah. âShe always orders a large coffee with milk and sugar. Sometimes sheâll get a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich, sometimes sheâll get a bagel with cream cheese. Sheâs always very nice and kind of quiet.â
Hagan tries to handle her most mundane errands as close to her home as possible â" just like everyone else. The beauty queen drops off her laundry at Eden Dry Cleaners and Tailoring just three blocks from her apartment.
However, the lady behind the counter says they have yet to wash any of her sashes.
Like most New Yorkers, Hagan comes from somewhere else. Raised in Alabama, Hagan is known to have penchant for Southern cooking. When sheâs feeling homesick, sheâll head over to the Roots Cafe in neighboring Park Slope for some sweet tea and grits.
âShe was really excited to discover us because sheâs from Alabama and we serve Southern food," says Roots Cafe owner Jamey Hamm. âI remember she likes the breakfast burrito. She is supercool and down to earth. I think I hear her Southern accent come out a little more when sheâs drinking sweet tea.â
On Sunday mornings, you might find Hagan at the Windsor Cafe on Prospect Park West.
âShe comes in between 10 and 11 and eats at the counter right by the door,â says owner Herculis Kontogiannis.
But donât expect her to chow down a lot of bacon and home fries.
According to Kontogiannis, âShe is obviously health-conscious because she orders the egg white vegetarian omelet ($ 9.95) and she always looks like she is about to go work out.â

If she ever visits the Double Windsor, owner Eric Horowitz, promises to serve her anything on the menu free of charge. âSheâs already won,â he says, âso now she can eat whatever she wants!â
