Sen. Mike Crapo is seen in a mugshot taken shortly after his arrest in the early hours of Sunday, Dec. 23.

Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo pleaded guilty to drunk driving in a Virginia court Friday, taking legal responsibility for an incident that shocked both his colleagues and constituents.

Crapo’s license will be suspended for one year, and he will also pay a $ 250 fine and complete an alcohol safety course. He won’t have to serve a 180-day suspended jail sentence as long as he remains on good behavior.

A first-offence DWI is a misdemeanor under Virginia law.

Crapo’s Dec. 23 arrest shattered the three-term Republican’s reputation as a squeaky clean Mormon teetotaler.

Crapo had previously claimed that he didn’t drink alcohol in keeping with the tenets of his Mormon faith.

The 61-year-old married senator has issued a statement apologizing to his constituents and his family for the “mistake,” but he has not given a further explanation.
